Frequently Asked Questions
What is a favicon?
A favicon (favorite icon) is a small icon displayed in the browser tab, bookmarks bar, and history. It helps users identify your website quickly among many open tabs and improves brand recognition.
What favicon sizes should I include?
At minimum, include 16x16 and 32x32 for browsers, 180x180 for Apple Touch Icon, and 192x192 plus 512x512 for Android. An SVG favicon provides perfect scaling at any size.
Which favicon format is best?
PNG is the most widely supported format. SVG favicons offer perfect scaling and small file sizes but have less browser support. ICO format supports multiple sizes in one file but is legacy. Using a combination of PNG and SVG is recommended.
Why is apple-touch-icon important?
The apple-touch-icon is displayed when iOS users add your website to their home screen. Without it, Safari takes a screenshot of the page instead, which usually looks poor. A 180x180 PNG is the recommended size.
